Hurricane Katrina Imagery

The Google Earth team is working on adding imagery of the impact of Hurricane Katrina. We will be posting links to this imagery for viewing as "image overlays" in Google Earth.

September 28, 2005

We've assembled National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration images of the impact of Hurricane Rita.

September 15, 2005

We've updated our Katrina data with new information including additional NOAA images of the Gulf Coast impact, an updated damage assessment file, and a listing of Red Cross shelters:

  • NOAA Imagery
  • Damage Assessment
    • floating polys for older graphics cards
  • Red Cross Shelters

We've processed four new data sets of imagery for users to see the impact of Hurricane Katrina. These data sets are being published as "view-based-refresh" services in Google Earth (translation - fly to New Orleans with this file on and wait for updated images to load in on top of the pre-Katrina New Orleans base map).

Google Earth was supplied with a preliminary storm damage assessment conducted by the National Geospatial Agency (NGA). Click this KMZ file to see a thematic map of Katrina's impact.

Note: This file represents a "snapshot" of the damage as of September 5, 2005. We do not anticipate getting access to updates of this impact assessment.

This KMZ file will show you satellite images of New Orleans post Katrina.  This single file should automatically fetch individual images and overlay them on top of the Google Earth basemap (before Katrina imagery).  You can use the transparency slider to see the before and after transition.

September 3, 2005

Through some serious efforts by NASA, Carnegie Mellon University, and Google, an overlay has been created for 3228 post-Hurricane Katrina images collected by NOAA (through Sept 2nd). Clicking on the link below will show a marker for each image in Google Earth.  Click the marker to view the updated image for that location.  Please note that these are large overlay files so only open one image at a time for best results.

  • Updated NOAA Image Overlays

Also, we have assembled a summary snapshot of all New Orleans related posts from the last 8 days. We'll be working on making this dynamic via network link, but this should give you an overview of the placemarks AND the image overlays that have been created by all our users. Very impressive work folks!

September 2, 2005 Update

On the Google Earth Community BBS, over 100 image overlays have been processed. Be sure to only activate one image at a time so you do not overload your system.
