Submit your success story video to the Google Earth Outreach Showcase
Video is a great way to showcase your project in a case study. Use the following
information as a guide if you'd like to send us a YouTube video with your Showcase
submission. To view an example of a case study video, watch Appalachian Mountaintop Removal in Google
Earth & Maps featuring Appalachian Voices.
Set the Stage
Give a brief background on your organization, its mission and how you began exploring
using maps for your non-profit. What were the goals of your map? What were you trying
to achieve by telling your story on the map?
Describe Your Map
Tell others what impact your organization noticed from telling your story in Google
Earth or Maps, or how mapping your volunteers or donor base helped support internal
decision-making. Please be as specific as possible and use data or metrics to support
Advice for others
Do you have any advice for others? Looking back, were there things you would've done
differently? How did you staff it? Did you hire talent or source it in-house? What
about your map was successful, and what could have been improved?
- Keep your video short and sweet. Under 4 minutes is generally a good rule-of-thumb
for today's YouTube audience.
- The use of cutaways and interviews from a variety of people (creators of the map,
executives, staff, a volunteer, a donor, a user of the map, etc.) can keep the audience
- A KML tour is a great
way to record your project and integrate it into your video. To capture high-resolution
Google Earth footage of your flyovers, you need Google Earth Pro's Movie Maker function
(non-profits should apply for a grant). For tips on
using Touring, visit this tutorial on creating a
narrated tour. For help using Movie Maker, visit the Google Earth User Guide.
- If you're using Google Earth footage, make sure you include both the Google
attribution and the unmodified attribution to our data providers. Check the Geo Permissions guidelines
to see if you need to get a broadcast agreement.
- We can only accept YouTube links for video submissions. Please make sure your video
is marked public, not private, so we can review it for inclusion in your Showcase
entry. Please also ensure that you've enabled embedding videos in the video settings.
